Significance of Badrinath Dham
Badrinath holds deep religious importance in Hinduism. According to mythology, Lord Vishnu meditated here. His consort, Goddess Lakshmi, took the form of a Badri tree to shade him. This gave the place its name, Badrinath. The temple is part of the Vaishnavite tradition. It is believed that a visit to Badrinath can lead to salvation.
It is part of the Panch Badri circuit. This is a group of five temples, in Uttarakhand, dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The holy town lies on the Alaknanda River’s banks. It’s surrounded by snow-capped peaks, including Neelkanth Mountain.
Badrinath Temple
The sage Adi Shankaracharya founded the Badrinath Temple in the 8th century AD. The temple has a black stone idol of Lord Vishnu in a meditative pose. It is one of the eight Swayam Vyakta Kshetras (self-manifested statues of Vishnu). The temple is open for six months, from April/May to November. It closes in winter due to extreme weather.
Before entering the temple, devotees dip in the Tapt Kund. It is a hot spring that cleanses sins and purifies the soul.
